We are pleased to introduce our new Chimichurri Spice Blend!
Chimichurri is an uncooked sauce used principally on grilled meat. Available in both green (chimichurri verde) and red (chimichurri rojo) varieties. We chose to create a delicious green mix.
Chimichurri is from Argentina and is typically made with parsley, minced garlic, and oregano, though there are regional variations, with Uruguay adding red pepper flakes for an added kick. We had to go with a Uruguay mix and add some chili flakes, we love everything with a bit of a spicy kick!
Legend has it that the name comes from ‘Jimmy’s curry’, Jimmy, being an Englishman who joined the fight for Argentine Independence. His name, being difficult for Argentines to pronounce, morphed into Chimichurri.
History does believe it a little different with Chimichurri being invented by gauchos to flavor meat cooked over open fires. If so, the gauchos probably used dried herbs as fresh herbs would spoil.
What are the health benefits of using Chimichurri?
Parsley is high in vitamin C and also gives you calcium, iron, vitamin A and carotenes. Garlic one of chimichurri’s main ingredients, is reputed to be a heart-healthy herb. Garlic may help prevent atherosclerosis, hardening of the arteries, which is the most common cause of heart attack and stroke. We added a little spice to our chimichurri with our chili flakes. Chili Flakes are a good source of vitamin A and beta-carotene.
How can you use Chimichurri at home?
Chimichurri is served with grilled meat and fried empanadas. It may be used a marinade too. As any other side or condiment, use your imagination to use this herb sauce; it will spark up anything that you add it to.
